【English name】 RHIZOMA PANACIS MAJORIS

[Source] This product is the dried rhizome of Panax japonicus CA Mey. var. major (Burk.) CY Wu et KM Feng or Panax japonicus CA Mey. var. bipinnatifidus (seem.) CY Wu et KM Feng, a plant of the Araliaceae family. Dig up in autumn, remove the rough bark and fibrous roots, and dry; or steam (boil) thoroughly and then dry.

[Properties] This product is slightly oblate spherical, conical or irregularly diamond-shaped, occasionally in the shape of beads, with a diameter of 0.5 to 2.8 cm. The surface is brown or yellowish brown, with obvious wart-like protrusions and wrinkles, occasionally with round sunken stem scars, and some have thin internodes remaining on one or both sides. It is hard, with an uneven cross section, pale yellowish white and powdery. It has a faint smell, tastes bitter and slightly sweet, and will sting the throat when chewed. The cross section of the steamed (boiled) ones is yellowish-white or yellowish-brown, slightly horny, tastes slightly bitter or sweet, and does not sting the throat when chewed.

【Identification】 (1) Cross section of this product: The cork layer consists of several rows of cork cells. The cortex is slightly narrow, with secretory ducts that are round or oblong, 32 to 500 μm in diameter, and surrounded by 5 to 18 secretory cells. The phloem secretion duct is smaller. The cambium is visible intermittently. The xylem vessels are arranged radially or in a V shape; the vessels are polygonal, with a diameter of about 76 μm; the rays are broad. Central myelin. The thin-walled cells contain starch granules, and some contain calcium oxalate clusters.
