What is rags?

Cordia dichotoma Forst. f., also known as tree seed, rag wood, tree seed, broken fruit, broken seed, broken axe, fairy branch, paper kite (Guangdong Province), is a plant under the genus Cordia of the Boraginaceae family. The origin is in the low-altitude areas with warmer temperatures and close to the sea in Asia. It is produced in the southeastern part of Tibet, Yunnan Province, Guizhou Province, Guangxi Province, Guangdong Province, Fujian Province and Taiwan, China. In Taiwan, China, the ragweed is harvested only once a year. The leaves fall off when it blooms in the spring. The summer of May and June in the lunar calendar is the ragweed fruit production season, when fruits with a diameter of 1 cm grow and turn orange-yellow when ripe. It grows in sparse forests on small hills and in canyon streams at an altitude of 300-1900 meters. It is distributed in Cambodia, northern Indonesia, northeastern Canada and New Caledonia.

Shrub, 3-8 m tall.

The leaves are ovate, broadly ovate or elliptical, 6-13 cm long, 4-9 cm wide, obtuse or with a short tip, annular or broadly wedge-shaped at the tip, generally microscopic or with wavy incisors on the margins, rarely entire, sparsely covered with short soft hairs or without hair on both sides; the leaf stems are thin, 2-5 cm long.

The cymes grow at the top of branches with leaves, are dichotomously branched and sparsely corymbose, 5-8 cm wide; the flowers are dimorphic and sessile; the calyx is bell-shaped, 5-lobed, 5-6 mm long, and the lobes are triangular, not the same size; the corolla is milky white, about the same length as the calyx, and the lobes are longer than those of the tube family; the filaments of male flowers are about 3.5 mm long; the reduced pistils are spherical; the filaments of bisexual flowers are 1-2 mm long, and the style is fused in a part 1-1.5 mm long, the first branch is about 1 mm long, the second branch is 2-3 mm long, and the column is spoon-shaped.

The pome is nearly spherical, light yellow or bright red, 10-15 mm in diameter, with a collagenous mesocarp, set off by a persistent calyx.

The flowering period is from February to April, and the fruiting period is from June to August.
