【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat, detoxifies, disperses stagnation and reduces swelling. It is used to treat febrile diseases, erysipelas, macules, carbuncles, swelling and pus, scrofula, and urinary retention.

【Clinical application】①Treatment of acute nephritis

Take 6 qian of Forsythia suspensa, add water and simmer until it decreases to 150 ml. Take it in 3 doses before meals. Reduce the dosage for children. Take it for 5 to 10 days as needed depending on the condition, and avoid spicy food and salt. All 8 patients had edema before treatment, blood pressure was between 140 and 200/96 and 110 mmHg, and urine tests showed protein, granular casts, and red and white blood cells. After treatment, edema disappeared in all 6 cases, and 2 cases improved significantly; blood pressure dropped significantly; urine tests turned negative in 6 cases, and 2 cases improved.

②Treatment of purpura

Take 6 qian of Forsythia suspensa, add water and simmer until it becomes 150 ml. Take it in 3 doses before meals, and avoid spicy food. One case of thrombocytopenic hemorrhagic purpura and two cases of allergic purpura were treated. After 2 to 7 days of treatment, all skin purpura disappeared. The effect of Forsythia suspensa on this disease may be related to the large amount of rutin it contains, which can maintain the normal resistance of capillaries and reduce the fragility and permeability of capillaries; in addition, Forsythia suspensa seems to have a desensitizing effect.

③Treatment of lung abscess

The Forsythia suspensa is made into an injection, each milliliter containing 1 gram of Forsythia suspensa. The drug was administered by tracheal instillation combined with intramuscular injection. Generally, 6 to 10 ml is used for tracheal instillation, once a day; after symptoms improve, it is done every other day; after it tends to atrophy or close, it is done twice a week. 25 cases were treated, 14 were cured, 10 improved, and 1 died; according to statistics of 18 cases, the fever subsided after an average of 12 days of treatment, and the average number of tracheal instillations was 26.8 times, with the highest number being 50 times.

④Treatment of retinal hemorrhage

Take 6-7 qian of Forsythia suspensa, decoct in water over low heat, and take three times before meals. In 2 cases of retinal macular hemorrhage, the symptoms were significantly absorbed and vision improved after taking the medicine for 20-27 days.
