What are the effects of Chaihu Sini Decoction?

Bupleurum is a very common Chinese herbal plant in life, and it has magical effects on the human body. But people who have seen it do not necessarily recognize it, let alone understand it. In life, there are many plants whose names are not well known to people but are silently contributing to people. They improve and treat many diseases and their complications. So what is Chaihu Sini Tang used for?

Ingredients: 6 grams of Bupleurum, 15 grams of White Peony Root, 10 grams of Citrus Aurantium, 10 grams of Scutellaria Baicalensis, 15 grams of Codonopsis Pilosula, 15 grams of Pinellia, 15 grams each of the three herbs, and 10 grams of Chicken Gizzard Stone.

Function: Soothe liver and relieve depression, strengthen the spleen and harmonize the stomach.

Indications: Liver-Qi disharmony, spleen-invading stomach causing stomach distension, flank pain, stomachache, hiccups, etc. Chronic gastritis, Helicobacter pylori infection, functional dyspepsia, chronic hepatitis, chronic cholecystitis, etc. in modern medicine, those with clinical manifestations of the above symptoms can all refer to the treatment.

Usage: Decoction in water, 1 dose per day, 1 time in the morning and 1 time in the evening before meals, 300 ml each time.

Explanation of the prescription: This prescription is composed of Sini San combined with Xiao Chaihu Tang with added ingredients. Si Ni San comes from Article 318 of Treatise on Febrile Diseases: "In case of Shaoyin disease with Si Ni San, the patient may suffer from cough, palpitations, difficulty urinating, abdominal pain, or heavy diarrhea. Si Ni San is the main treatment." The prescription is composed of 4 herbs: Bupleurum, White Peony Root, Citrus Aurantium, and Radix Glycyrrhizae. It functions to expel pathogens and relieve depression, soothe the liver and regulate the spleen. The symptoms it treats are mostly occasional, such as four adverse symptoms, cough, palpitations, difficulty in urination, and heavy diarrhea. It seems chaotic, but a closer look reveals that the pathogenesis is all caused by liver depression. Xiao Chaihu Decoction comes from Treatise on Febrile Diseases, Article 96 "… bitter fullness in the chest and flanks, loss of appetite, restlessness and nausea, or restlessness without nausea, or thirst, or abdominal pain, or hardness and distension under the flanks... Xiao Chaihu Decoction is the main treatment", and Article 263 "Shaoyang disease is characterized by bitter mouth, dry throat, and dizziness". All the symptoms it treats are caused by the stagnation of evil in the Shaoyang meridian and the stagnation of meridian Qi. The Liver Meridian of Foot Jueyin and the Gallbladder Meridian of Foot Shaoyang are mutually exterior and interior. Both pass through the chest and flanks and are closely related to the spleen and stomach. Liver depression affects the gallbladder, and gallbladder depression affects the liver, both of which can easily affect the spleen and stomach, resulting in liver (gallbladder) and spleen disharmony and liver (gallbladder) and stomach disharmony, which manifest as stomachache, epigastric fullness, flank pain, hiccups and other symptoms. Therefore, this prescription uses Sini San (with Zhishi replaced by Zhike) to expel evil and relieve depression, soothe the liver and regulate the spleen; and uses Xiao Chaihu Tang to harmonize the Shaoyang meridian, harmonize the stomach and reduce adverse effects; if the spleen is weak and the stomach qi is out of harmony, there will be abdominal distension and poor appetite, so Jiao Sanxian and chicken gizzard lining are added to help digestion and harmonize the stomach.

Add or subtract: If the pain is severe, add 15g of Notopterygium wilfordii and 15g of Pollen Pu to regulate qi, activate blood circulation and relieve pain; if there is acid reflux, burning sensation in the stomach, etc., add 6g of Coptis chinensis, 3g of Evodia rutaecarpa, 30g of Sepia bone, and 30g of calcined Corrugated seeds to purge the liver and stomach, absorb dampness and relieve pain; if there is abdominal pain, intestinal rumbling, and constipation and diarrhea, add 15g of fried white peony root, and add 15g of fried Atractylodes macrocephala, 10g of Saposhnikovia divaricata, and 30g of fried yam to soothe the liver and invigorate the spleen, dry dampness and stop diarrhea; if hiccups occur frequently, add 20g of Persimmon Calyx and 30g of Sword Bean to warm the middle and lower qi, reduce reverse flow and stop hiccups.

After reading the above introduction to what Chaihu Sini Tang is used for, I think everyone should have understood it. It can be used in many aspects and brings many benefits to the human body. We should pay attention to our diet and also be careful about the tiny Chinese herbal plants around us and make good use of them so that more patients can be cured.
