[Source] It is the root of the plant goat milk of the Campanulaceae family. Dig up the roots in August and September, wash them and dry them in the sun.

[Original form] Sheep milk (Bielu), also known as: milk tree (Illustrated Records of Plant Names and Realities).

[Habitat distribution] It grows in relatively shady and moist places such as hillsides, forests and river valleys. Distributed in Northeast China and Hebei, Shanxi, Shandong, Henan, Anhui, Jiangxi, Hubei, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangxi and other places. Produced in Heilongjiang, Guangxi, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Fujian and other places.

[Properties] The dry roots are slightly fusiform or conical, of varying sizes, generally 6 to 12 cm long and 1 to 3 cm in diameter, and sometimes branched. The upper part is coarser with numerous horizontal wrinkles, while the lower part is slightly thinner; there are vertical wrinkles and traces of fine roots. The surface is gray-brown to yellowish brown and rough; it is grayish white or light yellowish white after the cork is removed. The texture is loose and light, easy to break, the cross section is white and has many cracks. The taste is bitter and slightly spicy.

【Nature and flavor】 Sweet and spicy, neutral.

【Functions and indications】Reduce swelling, detoxify, discharge pus, eliminate phlegm, and promote lactation. It is used to treat lung abscess, breast abscess, intestinal abscess, swelling, scrofula, throat moth, milk deficiency and leucorrhea.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 0.5-1.5 liang (1.5-4 liang for fresh). For external use: mash and apply.

[Additional prescription] ① For treating lung abscess; ㈠ 1 liang 5 qian of goat’s milk and 1 liang 5 qian of honeysuckle leaves. Decoction in water. (Jiangxi Folk Herbs) ㈡ 4 liang of goat milk and 4 liang of white-hair vine leaves (package). Decoction in water. (Hangzhou Medicinal Plants)
