[Source] The whole insect of the black grasshopper of the Cicadidae family. It is captured between June and July, steamed to death and then sun-dried.

[Original morphology] The male is long and wide, 4.4 to 4.8 cm long, with a wingspan of 12.5 cm, while the female is slightly shorter; black and shiny. The head is wide, concave in the middle, and the top and side edges of the face are light yellowish brown. There is a pair of compound eyes, which are large and horizontally wide, and light yellowish brown; there are three simple eyes, located in the center of the compound eyes and arranged in a triangle. The antennae are short and located in front of the compound eyes. The edges of the pronotum on both sides are slightly enlarged, and the mesothorax has two faint central linear light reddish brown conical spots. There are two pairs of wings, which are transparent and reflective, with distinct wing veins, light yellow-brown leading edge, 1/3 of the basal cell is black, the sub-frontal cell is black, and has a light yellow-brown spot. The base 2/5 of the hind wing is black. Male insects have a sound organ, but female insects do not. There are three pairs of legs, which are light yellowish brown, and the stripes on the femurs, the base and the tip of the tibia are black. The abdominal segments are black, with slightly pointed ends and blunt angles. The male's abdominal cover is well developed, less than half the size of the abdomen, with an arc-shaped outer edge; the outer edge and posterior edge of the abdominal cover, the posterior edge of each abdominal segment, and scattered points on the ventral surface are all light yellowish brown. The female's abdomen cover is underdeveloped and the ovipositor is prominent.

[Habitat distribution] Adults mostly live on willows, tamarisks, maple poplars, and broad-leaved trees such as apple, pear, peach, and apricot. It is distributed in most parts of the country.

[Additional prescription] ① For treating wind-heat palpitations in children: cicada half a liang (remove wings and feet, lightly stir-fry), poria half a liang, dragon tooth three fen (finely grind), Ophiopogon japonicus half a liang (remove the core, roast), ginseng three fen (remove the reed head), Uncaria rhynchophylla three (two) fen, bezoar two qian (finely grind), snake molt five inches (burn to ashes), almond two fen (soaked in soup, remove the skin, tip and double kernels, stir-fry with bran until slightly yellow).
