[Original form] Gardenia is an evergreen shrub, 1-2m high. Branchlets green, hairy when young, nearly hairless later. Simple leaves are opposite, three leaves are arranged in whorls, and the petiole is short; there are two stipules, growing on the inner side of the petiole; the leaf blade is leathery, elliptic, broadly oblanceolate or obovate, 6-14cm long, 2-7cm wide, with acute or acuminate apex, cuneate base, entire margin, glossy on the upper side, and only clusters of short hairs in the axils of the lower veins; the lateral veins are pinnate. The flowers are large, very fragrant, terminal or axillary, with short stalks; the calyx is green, 2-3cm long, with 5-7 lobes, linear-lanceolate, usually slightly longer than the calyx; the corolla is high-footed saucer-shaped, white, later turning creamy yellow, fused into a tube at the base, 6-7 lobes at the top, arranged in a rotation, with rounded apex; the stamens are the same number as the corolla lobes, inserted in the throat of the corolla, the filaments are very short, the anthers are linear, longitudinally fissured, and 2-chambered; there is 1 female ovary, the ovary is inferior, and has 1 chamber. The fruit is dark yellow, obovate or oblong, 2-4cm long, with 5-9 wing-like longitudinal ridges and a strip-shaped persistent calyx at the tip. There are many seeds, bright yellow, flat and oval. The flowering period is from May to July, and the fruiting period is from August to November.
