Perennial herb, woody base, about 1 to 2 meters high. The rhizome is thick, horizontal, and surrounded by dense, linear fibrous roots. The stem is erect and smooth. Large 2-3 times pinnate compound leaves, basal leaves with long petioles, up to about 18 cm, petioles of cauline leaves gradually shorten towards the top, sheath-like at base, without stipules; leaflets ovate or ovate-elliptic, 3.5-10 cm long, 1.2-5 cm wide, with pointed apex, broadly cuneate or shallowly cordate at base, lateral leaflets often oblique, smooth on the upper side, sparsely pubescent along veins on the lower side, with heavily serrated edges. Dioecious, with spike-like panicles terminal or axillary, the inflorescence axis sparsely covered with white soft hairs, with a small subulate bract at the base, small flowers, yellow-white, calyx tube cup-shaped with 5 lobes, the lobes are triangular, and there are 5 petals, obovate-spoon-shaped; male flowers have about 20 stamens, longer than petals; female flowers have reduced stamens, 3 pistils, erect, ovate. The fruit is follicle-shaped, glabrous, oblong, about 3 mm long, with persistent calyx lobes and drooping fruit stalks, and is brown when ripe. Flowering period is from June to July. Fruiting period is September.

【Habitat distribution】

It grows in shady and moist places such as under sparse woods on hillsides, in grass or beside streams, on the edge of rocks, etc. Distributed in Northeast China, East China, Southwest China, Henan, Gansu, Shaanxi, Hunan, Tibet and other places.

Treat pain caused by injury or strain of muscles and bones.
