Traditional Chinese medicine culture is profound and extensive, and Chinese medicinal materials account for a large proportion of it. Do you know tung oil? What are its effects and functions, and how to consume it? I believe many people are very interested in it. Let me tell you one by one below. [Alias] Tung nut oil (Compendium of Materia Medica). [Source] Oil extracted from the seeds of tung oil plant of the Euphorbiaceae family. [Chemical composition] Tung oil obtained by hot pressing tung seeds is a drying oil (iodine value 157-170). When heated at high temperature (200-250℃), it can self-polymerize to form a gel or even completely solidify. This special property is due to the polymerization of its main ingredient α-tung oil essence, which is a feature not found in other drying oils. [Toxicity] Tung oil is highly toxic and is used externally in clinical practice. It is contraindicated for oral administration. The poisoning was caused by accidental ingestion (using tung oil as regular cooking oil in cooking dishes). According to observations of 289 cases, poisoning symptoms mostly appeared within 2 hours after accidental ingestion, with the earliest being 40 minutes and a few around 4 hours. The main symptoms are nausea and frequent vomiting; followed by abdominal pain, headache, dizziness, difficulty breathing, convulsions in the limbs, numbness of the hands and feet, chills, vomiting blood, bloody stools, and fever; in severe cases, coma and laryngeal muscle spasms may occur. Laboratory tests indicate that some cases have mild kidney damage, and can aggravate the clinical symptoms of liver disease and changes in liver function. All of them recovered after timely treatment. In addition, there are people who suffer subacute poisoning due to continuous ingestion of trace amounts of tung oil (tung oil is mixed with cooking oil). According to 52 case reports, its clinical manifestations are different from those of the above-mentioned acute poisoning in the following ways: 1. Gastrointestinal symptoms are mild; 2. Systemic symptoms are obvious, and fever, shortness of breath, and numbness of hands and feet are far more common than in acute poisoning. In addition, there are rare signs of acute poisoning, such as lower limb edema, decreased sensation, hot flushes, and heart enlargement; 3. The prognosis is more serious. Among the cases in this group, 5 died of heart failure. 【Nature and flavor】 Sweet and spicy, cold, poisonous. 【Function and indications】It can expel wind-induced phlegm.
