[Original form] Violaceae is a deciduous shrub, about 2m tall. Branches with white pith and appressed or striated bark, bark chestnut brown or grayish brown, peeling, branchlets glabrous or nearly glabrous. Leaves are opposite, thin in texture: petiole about 5mm long; leaf blade ovate or ovate-lanceolate, 7-8 (-12) cm long, acuminate at apex, rounded or broadly cuneate at base, sparsely toothed on margin, hairy, sparsely toothed on lower veins. Inflorescence racemose, with slightly fragrant flowers, usually 5, rarely 3 or 7; pedicels with short soft hairs; 4 sepals, with sparse hairs; 4 petals, white, sometimes with purple at the base; many stamens, nearly as long as the style; style separated in the middle and upper parts. Capsule, 4-lobed when mature. Seeds small, numerous. The flowering period is July-August, and the fruiting period is August-September.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Growing in mixed woods and mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forests.

[Properties] Identification of properties: The root is cylindrical, slightly twisted, with lateral roots of varying lengths and 3-5 cm in diameter. The surface is light gray with root marks. The outer bark is easy to fall off, revealing the yellow wood. It is tough and not easy to break. The cross section is yellowish-white and fibrous. It has a faint smell and tastes bitter and slightly spicy.
