Brown-leaf foxtail grass, perennial herb. It has rhizomes and tough fibrous roots. The culm is erect or slightly genu-flexed at the base, 0.75-2m high, 3-7mm in diameter, up to 1cm at the base, and has prop roots. The leaf sheath is loose, with dense or sparse warty hairs, a few are glabrous, the upper edge has warty cilia longer than the space bureau, the hairs are easy to fall off, the lower edge is thin papery and without cilia; the ligule is about 1mm long, with cilia about 2-3mm long; the leaf blade is fusiform and broadly lanceolate, 20-59cm long, 2-7cm wide, gradually pointed at the apex, with deep wrinkles. The panicle main axis is very long and tower-shaped, 20-60cm long and 2-10cm wide. The main axis is angular and the branches are loosely arranged. The spikelets are ovate-lanceolate, 2.5-4mm long, densely or sparsely arranged on one side of the branch, and some spikelets have a bristle under them. The first glume is triangular-ovate, 1/3-1/2 the length of the spikelet, with 3-5 veins, the second glume is 1/2-3/4 the length of the spikelet, or slightly shorter than the spikelet, with 5-7 veins; the first floret is male or neutral, the first lemma is the same length as the spikelet or slightly longer, the palea is membranous, 2/3 the length of the lemma, the second floret is bisexual, the second lemma is the same length or slightly shorter than the first lemma; the scales are 2, cuneate; the stamens are 3, extending from the tip of each grain when mature; the styles are 2, united at the base.
