【English name】 HERBA VIOLAE

[Other names] Plowshare, Viola glabra

[Source] This product is the dried whole herb of Viola yedoensis Makino, a plant of the Violaceae family . Harvest in spring and autumn, remove impurities and dry in the sun.

【Properties】 This product is mostly wrinkled into a ball. The main root is oblong-conical, 1 to 3 mm in diameter; light yellow-brown with fine longitudinal wrinkles. The leaves are basal, gray-green, and lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate when flattened, 1.5-6 cm long and 1-2 cm wide; the apex is obtuse, the base is truncated or slightly cordate, the margin is obtusely serrated, and both sides are hairy; the petiole is thin, 2-6 cm long, with obvious narrow wings on the upper part. The flower stem is slender; the petals are 5, violet or light brown; the spur is tubular. The capsule is oval or 3-lobed, with many seeds, light brown. It has a faint smell and tastes slightly bitter and slightly sticky.

[Identification] (1) Cross-section of the leaves of this product: The upper epidermal cells are relatively large, elongated in the tangential direction, with a thick outer wall and a mucilaginous inner wall, often swollen and semicircular; the lower epidermal cells are relatively small, occasionally with mucilaginous cells; the upper and lower epidermis have single-cell non-glandular hairs, 32 to 240 μm long, 24 to 32 μm in diameter, with short keratinous lines. There are 2 to 3 rows of palisade cells; the sponge cells are round and contain clusters of calcium oxalate crystals with a diameter of 11 to 40 μm. The vascular bundle of the main vein is tough outside, and there are 1 to 2 rows of thick-cornered cells on the inner side of the upper and lower epidermis.
