Health Tips | What is the reason for "sleep paralysis"? Here is the scientific explanation

Many people have experienced this situation: when they wake up from sleep, they are still conscious, but their whole body cannot move, and they cannot even shout. Some people even have fragmentary hallucinations... This is commonly known as " sleep paralysis ".

After experiencing sleep paralysis, I felt scared. Some people are lucky and wake up after one episode of sleep paralysis. As the symptoms disappear, they regain control of their bodies. But some people have to "wake up" many times before they can really get rid of sleep paralysis. The repeated struggles continue to magnify the fear.

What exactly is sleep paralysis?

This phenomenon is medically called " sleep paralysis " or " sleep paralysis ."

Sleep paralysis usually occurs during REM , a stage in the sleep cycle that is often accompanied by dreaming.

When the human body is in the rapid eye movement stage, all skeletal muscles except the respiratory muscles and eye muscles are in a state of extremely low tension. But this is actually a form of self-protection, which can prevent people in a sleeping state from acting out according to their dreams and hurting themselves or the person next to them.

Sleep paralysis occurs when a person is in the rapid eye movement stage. Due to some reasons, although consciousness has been restored, the body's muscles are still in a state of low tension, making it easy for the body to not obey the "commands" of consciousness.

Clinically, sleep paralysis often occurs in people who sleep on their backs. In addition, sleeping on a thick quilt or eating too much can also cause sleep paralysis.

When you experience sleep paralysis, you can try to gently move your fingers, tongue and other parts of your body to wake up the muscles throughout your body.
