Recently, a laughing gull appeared in the Chongming Dongtan Bird National Nature Reserve in Shanghai. This is the first time that this species has been recorded in mainland China. Previously, laughing gulls had only been sporadically recorded in Taiwan.
The reporter learned from Chongming Dongtan that on July 12, researchers recorded and photographed a laughing gull at Chongming Dongtan. It is currently the breeding season for common terns, and the laughing gull was discovered by researchers during a fight with a common tern.

The laughing gull is named for its unpleasant call, which makes a nasal "ha-ha-ha" sound like laughter and a sharper "ji-wa" sound. It belongs to the order Charadriiformes, the family Laridae, and is mainly distributed in North and South America. The adult laughing gull in the breeding season has a black head, red beak, and white body, while the laughing gull in the non-breeding season has a black beak, white head, and the black head feathers disappear.
