So, how is such a beautiful halo formed?

When does it often appear?

What should we pay attention to when observing?

A wave of popular science knowledge is coming, please check it out↓↓

1

What is a solar halo?

A halo, also known as a circular rainbow, is an atmospheric optical phenomenon formed when sunlight is refracted or reflected by ice crystals when passing through cirrostratus clouds.

2

What are the conditions for the formation of a solar halo?

The formation of the solar halo is the appearance of cirrostratus clouds composed of ice crystals in the high sky. The ice crystals in the cirrostratus clouds are equivalent to prisms. After being exposed to the sun, they will undergo physical changes such as refraction and reflection, thus forming a huge colorful ring around the sun, which is called a halo. The halo is usually ring-shaped or arc-shaped.

3

When do solar halos usually appear?

Solar halos often appear in spring and summer.

4

Notes on observing solar halos

The radius of the solar halo is usually 22 degrees and 46 degrees, and the solar halo phenomenon can usually be observed with the naked eye. The greater the ice crystal content in the cloud layer, the more obvious the halo is, and the easier it is to be observed.

It should be noted that when a halo appears, do not watch it with the naked eye for a long time to avoid burning your eyes.

5

What are the signs of a solar halo?

There is a Chinese proverb that "solar halos mean rain at midnight, moon halos mean wind at noon". Solar halos can, to a certain extent, be a precursor to weather changes. When solar halos appear, the weather may turn cloudy or rainy. However, there is no scientific basis for the saying that solar halos can foreshadow droughts, floods, earthquakes, or that solar halos are a bad sign.
