FedEx: Unlocking Japan's e-commerce potential

FedEx released a new report, "Unlocking the Potential of E-commerce in Japan." Japan is the third largest e-commerce market. In 2023, its revenue exceeded $134 billion.

Rakuten, Amazon and Yahoo Shopping are the largest online marketplaces in Japan.

Credit card payment is by far the most popular payment method for online shopping, with a market share of 68.4%.

Besides language localization that builds trust among customers, a mobile-friendly shopping platform is essential to reach the largest group of potential customers.

Sales channels and platforms start

E-commerce marketplaces are an easy way to reach Japanese customers directly.

Marketplaces like Amazon not only provide domestic logistics cooperation, but also services such as payment support, customer service, and product page localization.

Build demand and convert sales

Google has nearly 75% market share in Japan on both PC and mobile platforms.

Language remains a driver of search engine loyalty.

The online social media network is extremely popular in Japan, with more than 105 million users.

Seamless cross-border payments

In Japan, credit cards are the preferred payment method for online shopping.

Japan also has a lot of digital wallet options, including some unique to Japan, such as PayPay. Digital wallet adoption lags behind other countries in the region, but is growing rapidly.

Delightful e-commerce logistics

In terms of domestic logistics, Japan has a strong parcel delivery network. These services can be fulfilled through third-party logistics partners.

For shipments coming directly from overseas, FedEx delivers directly to customers using its own couriers or through partners.

Using a service like Fulfillment by Amazon or another third-party logistics company can handle the complexities of cross-border shipping, but it comes at a cost.
