eMarketer: Top 15 retailers will account for more than 72% of U.S. e-commerce sales in 2021

Best Buy will be the only top U.S. retailer to see a decline in e-commerce sales in 2021.

eMarketer recently updated its ranking of the top 10 U.S. retailers by e-commerce sales, but this time expanded the ranking to the top 15. These 15 companies will account for 72.3% of U.S. e-commerce sales this year, up 10.5 percentage points from 2019, primarily due to growth at Amazon and Walmart.

Eight of the top 15 retailers will outpace U.S. retail e-commerce sales growth (17.9%) in 2021. These eight retailers have one thing in common: They have capitalized on the demand for home improvement, online groceries, and pet care caused by the COVID-19 pandemic while offering consumers convenient delivery options, good value, or both.

Three of the top 15 retailers saw e-commerce sales increase by at least 25%, with Amazon's growth slightly lower at 24.9%.

While nearly all of the top 15 retailers saw a surge in sales in 2020, only a handful of companies (including Etsy, Amazon, and Costco) will continue to grow sales above 2019 levels.

eBay and Qurate Retail Group were at the bottom of the list in terms of growth, although both experienced dramatic turnarounds from 2019. Despite two years of strong growth, Best Buy's e-commerce sales declined in 2021, hurt by reduced demand for electronics.
