Bluedot: 2020 Holiday Habits Report

Bluedot has released its 2020 Holiday Habits Report. The new study, based on a survey of 1,500 U.S. consumers conducted last month, examines consumer habits and behaviors during the rapidly approaching holiday shopping season. The survey suggests that mobile apps, curbside pickup, and buy online, pick up in store (BOPIS) are all critical initiatives as retailers rush to maintain market share during the extremely uncertain holiday shopping season.

80% of consumers say the ongoing pandemic will increase their gift purchases for curbside pickup. This relatively new retail service has yet to meet customer expectations, with 60% of consumers wanting a worker to deliver their order to their car, but only 30% of consumers currently using this service. BOPIS is also attractive to consumers, as 2/3 of respondents plan to use this service the same or more times this year.

Surprisingly, 75% of consumers plan to use mobile apps to complete at least half of their holiday shopping this year. The study also showed an increase in mobile app downloads for holiday shopping, with half of consumers likely to download two or more new apps this shopping season.

It’s also worth noting that the vast majority of consumers (92%) are concerned about the health and safety precautions that stores are taking. Consumers also cited excessive wait times and long lines as major safety concerns for holiday shopping.

Generational and gender differences

This year, 58% of Millennials expect to do 75% of their holiday shopping via mobile apps, compared to Gen X (49%), Baby Boomers (45%) and Gen Z (42%).

Gen Z was the only generation to rank employees wearing masks and gloves as their top safety requirement for curbside pickup, closely followed by minimal wait time. Other generations ranked minimal wait time as their top safety requirement.

Men are more likely than women to think it is safer to wear protective clothing when shopping in stores.
