Amap: 2018 National Travel Report for the Golden Week

As of this year, the Chinese people have ushered in the 20th "National Day Golden Week" holiday. In the past 20 years, the centralized holiday system has gradually changed the Chinese people's lifestyle. Driven by the trend of consumption upgrading, the Chinese people's enthusiasm for long holiday travel has also increased.

Today, based on the massive travel data during the National Day Golden Week, Amap released the "2018 National Day Golden Week National Travel Report" (hereinafter referred to as the Report), which decodes the various travel patterns of the people during the long holiday through comprehensive analysis of traffic big data and tourism big data.

Transit and tourist cities become "traffic jam cities"

From the overall situation, during the Golden Week, domestic urban road traffic pressure increased and tourist flow in scenic spots reached a peak.

From the perspective of national highway congestion trends, the report shows that the highest proportion of congested mileage occurred between 9:00 and 12:00 on October 1, while the return peak occurred between 16:00 and 18:00 on October 5. During the National Day holiday, the Pearl River Delta region had the highest level of congestion, followed by the Yangtze River Delta, and the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and the Chengdu-Chongqing region had similar levels of congestion.

National highway congestion trend during the National Day holiday

From the perspective of cities across the country, based on the all-day congestion delay index (6:00-22:00), it was found that transit and tourist cities became the most congested cities during the National Day Golden Week. Among them, Qingyuan City became the most congested city in the country, with an all-day congestion delay index of 1.62, followed by Maoming and Ganzhou. In addition, Lanzhou, Tai'an, Xi'an, Luoyang, Yinchuan, Shantou and Zhanjiang are also on the list of the top ten congested cities.

Judging from the situation on national highways, the longest congestion time during this year's National Day was as high as 113 hours, which was the Guangzhou straight line of S15 Shenhai Expressway between Foshan and Guangzhou (from Shayong Overpass to Guanghua Toll Station); as well as G9411 Dongguan-Foshan Expressway (from Taiping Bridge to Humen Bridge) and G6 Beijing-Tibet Expressway (from Beijing border to Juyongguan). This section was the most congested during this year's Golden Week, ranking in the top three of the country's most congested highways.

The roads around scenic spots are the most congested, with Hongcun in Huangshan City ranking first

The report shows that during the National Day Golden Week, the scenic spot with the most congested roads around it was Hongcun in Huangshan City, with a congestion delay index of 4.0 and an average speed of 16 kilometers per hour; followed by Shaolin Temple and Guanmenshan Reservoir Scenic Area in Benxi City. In addition, Huangling Scenic Area in Wuyuan, Jiangxi Province, Mulan Tianchi in Wuhan City, Fengdongshi Scenic Area in Zhangzhou City, Zhougong Temple Scenic Area in Baoji City, Beijing Wildlife Park, Xiaoyao Lake in Guilin, and Penglai Ocean Polar World in Yantai City are also among the top 10 scenic spots with congested roads around the National Day.

Red tourism continues to heat up, with Tiananmen Square being the most popular destination during National Day

This year, scenic spots around the country announced a large-scale reduction in ticket prices before the National Day, which became a big boon for Golden Week travel. According to the China Tourism Academy (Data Center of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism), the country received a total of 726 million domestic tourists, a year-on-year increase of 9.43%; domestic tourism revenue reached 599.08 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 9.04%. Key scenic spots are very popular and passenger flow has reached a peak.

What are the most popular scenic spots? The report shows that based on the tourism big data of Amap, Tiananmen Square ranks first among the top ten most popular scenic spots in the country during the National Day holiday. According to Xinhua News Agency, on October 1, 145,000 people watched the National Day flag-raising ceremony in Tiananmen Square. In addition, the West Lake Scenic Area in Hangzhou, the Wuzhen Scenic Area, and the Confucius Temple in Nanjing are still popular.

During the holidays, many scenic spots have arranged special cultural activities to attract tourists. At the same time, major museums have held wonderful exhibitions and have become destinations for parent-child cultural tours. According to the report, during the National Day, the Palace Museum in Beijing was the most popular, ranking first in the list of the top ten popular museums during the National Day; followed by Suzhou Museum and Guangdong Museum. In addition, Henan Museum, Shanghai China Art Museum, Shanxi Museum, National Museum of China, Taiyuan Museum, Shenzhen Museum and Nanjing Museum are also among the top ten popular museums during the National Day.

In-depth self-driving tours are hot, and Qinghai route is the most popular

The National Day holiday gave people the opportunity to go on an in-depth self-driving tour. The report, based on the self-driving planning data mining of Amap, found that the popular long-distance self-driving routes (5 days or more) during the National Day holiday were mainly concentrated in the central and western regions, and the main departure or transit cities were concentrated in Qinghai, Hubei, Guizhou, Shanxi, Henan, Ningxia, Yunnan and other places. These routes generally connect the most local natural and cultural heritages in various places, attracting a large number of self-driving tourists.

Top 10 National Day long driving routes

Among them, the Qinghai route is the most popular. Chaka Salt Lake, known as China's "Sky Mirror", is extremely clear. The blue sky and white clouds are reflected on the lake, making it difficult to distinguish which is the sky and which is the lake. The Mogao Grottoes Scenic Area is also listed as a "World Cultural Heritage" by UNESCO.

In addition, the Hubei Line, Yunnan-Guizhou Line, and Ningxia Line are also popular among self-driving enthusiasts. For this reason, Amap released a list of cities where people travel at night during the National Day holiday based on night navigation data (21:00-4:00 am) - the top ten night-time cities. The data shows that excluding cross-city factors, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Chengdu ranked in the top three of the national night-time cities list during the National Day holiday, followed by Beijing and Shanghai. Judging from night travel alone, Chengdu has been on par with the four first-tier cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen.

It is worth noting that before the National Day holiday, Amap jointly released relevant forecast reports with the Ministry of Transport's Road Network Center, the Ministry of Public Security's Traffic Management Bureau, and more than 80 traffic management departments across the country, providing authoritative suggestions for avoiding congestion and travel recommendations for holiday travelers. Today, the comparison between the "2018 National Travel Report for the Golden Week of National Day" and the previously released forecast reports showed that the predicted congestion trend is basically consistent with the actual trend, indicating that big data has scientific reference significance for guiding people's holiday travel.
