Google: Survey shows that the number of searches from mobile devices has increased by 177%

Google has seen a surge in last-minute travel searches on its site from mobile devices in recent months.

Google collected data on searches by UK travellers in the second week of July, and its data shows that mobile devices accounted for 41% of all searches for flights (on desktop and mobile), 33% for accommodation and 26% for package holidays.

The above data shows that the number of searches for last-minute travel products using mobile devices has increased. In the same period last year, flight searches, accommodation searches and package holiday product searches from mobile devices accounted for 12%, 10% and 6% respectively.

Google saw similar growth in the second quarter of this year, with last-minute flight searches and package vacation searches coming from mobile devices accounting for 40% and 27% respectively.

The search engine giant also noted that searches from desktop computers had fallen, with searches for packaged holidays from those devices down 12% in June compared with the same period last year, while searches from mobile devices were up 177%.

Flight searches from desktop computers fell 14% year-on-year, while searches from mobile devices increased 211%.

Google's conclusions are supported by a recent survey report from Comscore and an infographic published by My Destination, both of which reflect the growth in the number of travel searches conducted using mobile phones.
