[Source] The branches and leaves of Taxus cuspidata of the Taxaceae family.

[Original form] Evergreen tree, up to 20 meters high. The bark is reddish brown and shallowly fissured; the branches are densely grown and the twigs are alternate. The leaves are spirally arranged in two irregular rows, obliquely spreading at an angle of about 45 degrees to the twigs, linear, 1.5-2.5 cm long, 2.5-3 mm wide, narrow at the base, with a short petiole, abrupt at the tip, glossy green above, with a raised midrib, and two gray-green (light yellowish brown when dry) stomatal bands below that are twice as wide as the side bands. Flowers are unisexual and dioecious; cones are solitary in leaf axils; male flowers have 9 to 15 stamens and 5 to 6 anthers; female flowers have oval, light pink ovules. The seeds are oval, grown in a red, fleshy, cup-shaped or urn-shaped aril. When ripe, they are purple-brown and shiny, about 6 mm long, with 3 to 4 obtuse longitudinal ridges on the upper part and a small convex tip on the top. The hilum is usually triangular or nearly square, rarely broadly elliptical; there are several pairs of scales at the base of the aril. Flowering period is from March to June. Fruiting period is September.

[Habitat distribution] Scattered in mountain forests. Distributed in Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang and other places.

[Chemical composition] The leaves contain diterpenoid compounds: taxolone, taxolone A, taxolone H, taxolone L, etc., and also contain ponasterone A, ecdysterone, and golden pine biflavonoids. The young branches contain taxol. The stem bark contains taxol which has anti-leukemia and anti-tumor effects. The heartwood contains taxol.

【Pharmacological action】 ①Hypoglycemic effect

【Functions and indications】 "Bencao Tuichen": "Diuretic, menstruation-regulating. Treats kidney disease and diabetes."

[Usage and Dosage] For internal use: decoct in water, leaves: 1-2 qian; twigs (peeled): 3-5 qian.

[Additional prescription] ① For the treatment of diabetes: 2 qian of yew leaves. Decoction in water, take twice a day, continuously (if nausea and vomiting occur, stop taking the medicine; if there are no side effects, gradually increase the dosage to 5 cents). (Jilin Chinese Herbal Medicine
