[Original form] Zanthoxylum bungeanum is a woody vine, 2-4m high. Odd-pinnate compound leaves are alternate, 10-25m long including petiole; petiole 1-4＿ long; rachis and petiole have downward-curved tiny thorns; petiolules 1-2mm long; leaflets 11-15, oblong, ovate, oblong-ovate or elliptical, 2.5-7cm long, 1.5-3cm wide, with short pointed and obtuse tip, base broadly cuneate or nearly rounded, sometimes slightly oblique, entire or with very fine and irregular serrations, dark green and shiny above, light green below, nearly glabrous; lateral veins 6-pairs. The corymbose panicles are axillary, 1-3m long; the pedicel and pedicel are thick and slightly pubescent; the pedicel is less than 1mm long; the male flowers are blue; the sepals are 4-5, broadly ovate, 0.5-1mm long; the petals are 4-5, oblong, 2-3mm long, with short eyelashes on the edges; the stamens are 4-5, and are the same length as the petals when not blooming; the reduced carpels are glabrous, with forked tips. Follicles red, with glandular dots; mature carpels 3-4. Seeds are ovoid, black and shiny. The flowering period is May, and the fruiting period is April-October.
