[Source] Stephania japonica (Thunb.) Miers., a plant of the genus Stephania in the family Menispermaceae, is used as medicine using its roots or vine stems . It can be harvested, washed, sliced ​​and dried in spring and autumn.

[Original form] A twining deciduous woody vine that can grow up to 5 meters long and is completely hairless. The root is cylindrical, similar in shape to Stephania tetrandra but thinner, with a dark brown outer skin and yellowish-white inner surface. The old stems are woody and the twigs are slender and tough. The leaves are alternate, dark green and shiny on the upper side, grayish white with white powder on the lower side, and hairless on both sides. Small yellow-green flowers bloom in the leaf axils in summer. The drupe is nearly spherical, about 6 mm in diameter, and red when ripe.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter, pungent, cold.

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat and detoxifies, promotes diuresis and reduces swelling, dispels wind and relieves pain. Used for sore throat, toothache, stomachache, edema, athlete's foot, urinary urgency and pain, urinary difficulty, vulvar eczema, rheumatic joint pain; used externally to treat bruises, snake bites, carbuncles, sores and boils.

[Usage and Dosage] 3-5 qian; appropriate amount for external use; mash the fresh root or whole herb for external application, or grind it into powder and apply it on the affected area.
