[Source] It is the root and rhizome of Rubia cordifolia , a plant of the Rubiaceae family. Dig up in spring and autumn, remove the stems, soil and fine roots, and dry them in the sun. Generally, the quality of those harvested in autumn is better.

[Habitat distribution] Grown in plains, forest edges and bushes in mountains. It is distributed in most parts of the country. It is mainly produced in Shaanxi, Hebei, Henan, Shandong and other places. In addition, it is also produced in Hubei, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Gansu, Liaoning, Shanxi, Guangdong, Guangxi, Sichuan and other places. Shaanxi and Henan have the largest output and the best quality.

[Properties] The rhizome is irregularly lumpy, with the remains of the above-ground stem and fine roots at the top, and several or dozens of lateral roots below. The branch roots are cylindrical and curved, about 10 to 20 cm long and 0.1 to 1 cm in diameter. The surface is brown or reddish brown with fine longitudinal lines. The cork is easy to peel off, revealing the yellow-red core. It is brittle and easy to break, with a flat cross section, yellow-red or light red, and many small holes. It has a faint smell and a slightly bitter taste. The best ones are those with thick and long strips, reddish-brown surface, dark red inside, few branches, no stems and few fine fibrous roots.

It is specialized in moving blood and activating blood circulation. A common remedy for treating women's menstrual blockage is to boil one liang of it in wine and drink it. The menstrual blockage will occur in one day. It is very effective. "Ming Yi Bie Lu" says that long-term use can improve the essence and lighten the body, while "Rihuazi" says that it can cause spermatorrhea. These are quite inconsistent and may not be reliable."

[Clinical application] Treatment of chronic bronchitis: 6 qian of fresh madder (3 qian of dried), 6 qian of orange peel, add 200 ml of water, boil into 100 ml. Take twice a day, 50 ml each time. Or concentrate the decoction of madder and orange peel and press it into tablets, each tablet is 0.6 grams (containing 0.5 grams each of the raw herbal medicine madder and orange peel). Take 3 times a day, 10 to 1.5 tablets each time. One course of treatment is 10 days. 123 cases were treated, with a markedly effective rate of 40.7% after one course of treatment and 69.1% after two courses of treatment. According to observations, the therapeutic effect of the wheezing type is slightly better than that of the simple type; the therapeutic effect is higher in non-smokers; the significant efficacy in men is higher than that in women; the therapeutic effect is better in the young age, short course of illness, and mild condition.
