【English name】 HERBA EUPATORII

[Other names] Orchid grass, Zedoaria, round-stemmed Zedoaria, provincial head grass

[Source] This product is the dried above-ground part of Eupatorium fortunei Turcz. of the Asteraceae family . It is harvested twice in summer and autumn, impurities are removed and the fruit is dried.

[Properties] The stem of this product is cylindrical, 30-100 cm long and 0.2-0.5 cm in diameter; the surface is yellow-brown or yellow-green, some with purple, with obvious nodes and longitudinal ridges; the texture is brittle, and the pith is white or hollow in cross section. The leaves are opposite, petiolate, mostly wrinkled, broken, and green-brown; complete leaves are 3-lobed or undivided, with the middle lobe of the divided ones larger, lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate when flattened, with a narrow base and serrated edges; the undivided ones are oval, ovate-lanceolate or elliptical when flattened. It has a fragrant aroma and a slightly bitter taste.

[Identification] Take 1g of the powder of this product, add 15ml of petroleum ether (30-60℃), ultrasonically treat for 10 minutes, filter, evaporate the filtrate, add 1ml of petroleum ether (30-60℃) to the residue to dissolve it, and use it as the test solution. Take another 1g of Perilla frutescens reference medicinal material and prepare the reference medicinal material solution in the same way. According to the thin layer chromatography method (Appendix Ⅵ B), 5 μl of each of the above two solutions were taken and spotted on the same silica gel G thin layer plate, and petroleum ether (30-60℃)-ethyl acetate (19:1) was used as the developing solvent. After development, the plate was taken out, dried, sprayed with vanillin sulfuric acid test solution, and heated until the spots were clearly colored. In the chromatogram of the test sample, spots of the same color appear at the corresponding positions in the chromatogram of the control medicinal material.

[Preparation] Remove impurities, wash, moisten slightly, cut into sections, and dry in the sun.

【Nature and flavor】 Spicy, neutral.

【Functions and indications】Aromatic and dehumidifying, invigorating the spleen and appetite, and relieving heat. It is used for dampness and turbidity blocking the middle part of the body, abdominal distension and nausea, sweet and greasy taste in the mouth, bad breath, excessive salivation, symptoms of summer-heat and dampness, and headache and chest tightness.

【Usage and Dosage】 3～9g.

【Storage】Keep in a cool and dry place.

【Remarks】 (1) It is an important medicine for treating damp-heat diseases, and is often used in combination with Patchouli, Scutellaria baicalensis, Coix seed, etc. In addition, it is also suitable for symptoms such as internal damp-heat obstruction, sweet and greasy salivation in the mouth, and foul breath. It is used for symptoms such as internal accumulation, fear of cold, fever, headache, chest tightness, and stomach dullness, and is often used together with Patchouli, Magnolia officinalis, and lotus leaf.
