[Source] Medicinal material source: the whole herb of Gynura serrata, a plant of the Ranunculaceae family.

[Original form] Tiankui, a small perennial herb, 10-30cm tall. The tuber is 1-2cm long, 3-6mm thick, and has a brown-black skin. The stem is erect, 1-3 branches, branched at the top, and covered with sparse white soft hairs. Basal leaves are trifoliate; petioles are 3-12cm long, with bases enlarged and sheath-like; leaf blades are ovate or kidney-shaped in outline, 1.2-3cm long; leaflets are fan-shaped rhombus or obovate rhombus, 0.6-2.5cm long, 1-2.8cm wide, 3 deeply lobed, and the deep lobes are 2-3 scalloped notches, glabrous on both sides, often purple on the underside; stem leaves are smaller, alternate, and have shorter petioles. The inflorescence is monochasial or dichasial, with pedicels 1-2.5cm long and covered with white fine hairs; bracts, bracteole-like, 3-lobed or unlobed; flowers are bisexual, small, 4-6 in diameter; sepals 5, petal-like, narrowly elliptic, 4-6mm long, 1.2-2.5mm wide, white, often with lavender, and obtuse at the apex; petals 5, spoon-shaped, 2.5-3.5mm long, nearly truncated at the apex, with a convex sac-like base; stamens 8-14, filaments widened at the bottom, anthers broadly elliptic, yellow; 2 staminodes, linear-lanceolate, located on the inner side of the stamens, white membranous, and nearly as long as the filaments; carpels 3-4, styles short, apex recurved outwards, and glabrous. There are 3-4 follicles, 6-7mm long and 2mm wide, with transverse veins on the surface and a small beak at the tip. There are many seeds, which are ovate-elliptical, about 1 mm long, dark brown, and have small tubercle-like protrusions on the surface. The flowering period is March-April, and the fruiting period is April-May.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown under sparse woods, in thickets, on ditches, roadsides or in shady places in valleys.

[Cultivation] Biological characteristics: It likes shade and humidity, and often grows wild in the shade of roadsides and gaps in low mountain areas. Avoid waterlogging and it is better to cultivate it in well-drained, loose and fertile loam.

【Properties】 Characteristic identification, the whole plant is 15-30m long. The tuber is fleshy, with brown-black skin and wiry rootlets. The stem is slender and covered with fine white hairs. The basal leaves are trifoliate, with long petioles and expanded sheath-like bases; the leaflets are fan-shaped rhombus or obovate rhombus, 0.6-2.5cm long, 3 deeply lobed, yellow-green, and often purple underneath. The stem leaves are smaller and alternate. Simple or dichotomous cymes, small flowers, 4-6mm in diameter; small bracts; slender pedicels, pubescent; sepals often lavender; petals spoon-shaped. The follicles are oblong, 6-7mm long, with raised transverse veins on the surface. The seeds are oval, brown and about 1 mm long. It has a faint smell and tastes slightly sweet and bitter.

【Functions and indications】Detoxification and swelling reduction; diuresis and relieving stranguria. Mainly used for scrofula, carbuncle, snake and insect bites, hernia, and painful urination
