[Other names] Shuiwowo, Jiuniu Zaogudan (Shaanxi Chinese Herbal Medicine), Dimu Pregnant Grass, Water Lilac, Tongjing Grass, Water Orchid, Caiziling (Yunnan Chinese Herbal Medicine Selection).

[Source] It is the flower, root or whole herb with root of the Onagraceae plant. Pick flowers in summer and autumn and dry them in the shade. Collect roots in autumn, wash, cut into sections and dry them. The whole herb can be harvested in all seasons and used fresh or dried.

[Original form] Perennial herb, up to 1 meter tall. The rhizome is thick. The stem is erect, densely covered with white long soft hairs and short glandular hairs, and branched at the top. The leaves in the lower and middle parts of the stem are opposite, and those in the upper part are alternate, ovate-lanceolate, 3-8 cm long, 0.8-2 cm wide, with fine serrations on the margins, sharp tips, narrow bases, slightly clasping the stems, and covered with long soft hairs on both sides. The flowers are bisexual, solitary in the upper leaf axils, light pink or purple-red; sepals are oblong, covered with soft hairs on the outside; petals are obovate, with a concave notch at the apex; there are 8 stamens, 4 long and 4 short; the stigma is 4-lobed. The capsule is cylindrical, 5 to 7 cm long. The seeds are oval, densely covered with small papillae, and have a tuft of long white hairs on the top. Flowering period is from August to September.

[Habitat distribution] Growing beside ditches, forests and roadsides. Distributed all over the country.

[Pharmacological action] The leaves have an antibacterial effect on Staphylococcus aureus in vitro tests and can also be used as a beverage. In the early years, there were reports of poisoning cases caused by ingestion of this grass, which could result in epileptic convulsions and coma.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 2 to 3 qian. For external use: mash or grind into powder for application.

[Additional prescription] ① Treat amenorrhea: 3 to 5 qian of Tongjingcao root. Decoction in water and add brown sugar.
