[Original form] Crowberry is a deciduous small tree or shrub, 2-8m tall. The stem bark is gray-brown with longitudinal stripes. The twigs and buds are reddish purple, and the branches and leaves emit a foul odor when crushed. Leaves opposite; petiolules 1-2mm long; stipules linear, base wider, apex pointed, pubescent; odd-pinnate compound leaves, (8-)12-32cm long, rachis light green, leaflets 5-9, rarely 3-11, oblong or elliptic, rarely rounded, 4-9cm long, 2-4cm wide, apex acuminate, base obtuse, margin with sparse short serrations, tooth tips with glands, below with white pubescent along veins, main vein obvious above, prominent on the back; lateral veins 8-11, pubescent. The flowers are bisexual, with terminal panicles and pedicels up to 21 cm long. The flowers are numerous, dense, yellow-white, and 4-5 mm in diameter. There are 5 sepals and petals, which are elliptical and persistent. The disk is disc-shaped, with 3 separate carpels. There are 5 stamens with flat filaments. There are 3 pistils. The ovary is ovate. The fruit is follicle-shaped, 1-2 cm long, with 1-3 follicles developing from each flower. The pericarp is soft and leathery, purple-red, and has longitudinal veins. The seeds are nearly round, with a fleshy, black, and shiny aril. The flowering period is May-June, and the fruiting period is August-September.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown in jungles or thickets on hillsides, valleys, and river banks, and also cultivated.
