[Source] Medicinal material source: The root of Panax notoginseng of the Araliaceae family.

[Original form] Perennial herb, 45-55m high. The rhizome is creeping, tuberous, and has sunken stem scars; the root tuberous fusiform. The scales at the base of the stem are persistent, the leaves are alternate, palmately compound, with 3 leaves whorled at the top of the stem; the petiole is 4-7cm long and glabrous; the stipules are ovate, about 2mm long; the leaflets are 5, rarely 7, pinnately divided, with lobes of unequal size, larger in the middle and smaller at both ends, 6-12cm long, 2.5-6cm wide, apex caudate-acuminate, base broadly cuneate to nearly rounded, oblique, margin serrated and bristly, with sparse bristles on the upper veins. Umbel solitary at the top of the stem, with 50-80 flowers, pedicels 8-10cm long, glabrous, calyx 5-lobed, glabrous; flowers light green, 5 petals, oblong to long elliptic; 5 stamens, filaments equal to or slightly longer than petals; ovary inferior, 2-chambered, 2 styles combined into 1, stigma slightly swollen and slightly curved. The berries are drupe-like, spherical and kidney-shaped, about 8 mm in diameter, and red when ripe. There are 2 seeds, which are nearly spherical, white, and 2-3mm in diameter. The flowering period is May-June, and the fruiting period is July-August.

【Nature and flavor】 Slightly bitter; sweet; warm

【Functions and indications】 Disperses blood stasis and stops bleeding; reduces swelling and relieves pain. Mainly used for traumatic injuries, rheumatic pain, coughing up blood, bleeding due to trauma, vomiting blood, epistaxis, blood in stool, metrorrhagia, weakness after illness, and tuberculosis

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 1-9g; or made into pills or powder; or soaked in wine. For external use: take appropriate amount and grind into powder for application.
