[Source] It is the flower of the night-blooming primrose of the Magnoliaceae family. Picked in April and May and sun-dried.

[Original form] Evergreen bare shrub, 2 to 3 meters high. The leaves are alternate, elliptic to oblong, 7-18 cm long, 3-6.5 cm wide, entire, apex caudate-acuminate, base long cuneate, dorsally rolled, with reticulate veins on both sides very prominently raised, leathery; petiole 5-10 mm long. The flower is single, terminal, white, very fragrant, 3-4 cm in diameter; the pedicel is thick, glabrous, often curved downward, 1.5-2.5 cm long; the sepals are 3, light green, obovate, glabrous; the petals are 6, in 2 rows, obovate, the outer ones are larger, 2-2.5 cm long, contracted at the base, and easy to fall off; the stamens are numerous, white, the filaments are flat, and the anthers are inward-dehiscing; the carpels are few, clustered on the receptacle, and densely covered with small papillae. Aggregate fruit about 3 cm long; follicles nearly woody. Flowering period is from May to June.

[Habitat distribution] Distributed in Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, Taiwan and other places. Produced in Guangdong and Guangxi.

[Properties] The dried flowers are slightly umbrella-shaped, inverted bell-shaped or irregular spheres, 2 to 3 cm long and 1 to 2 cm in diameter, with dark red to brown-purple outside. The calyx has three segments, which are obovate in shape, about 1.5 cm long and 8 mm wide, with granular protrusions on both sides. There are 6 petals, which are obovate and curled. The outer 3 petals are larger, about 2 cm long and 1.2 cm wide. The base of the outer surface has granular protrusions, and the inner neck is smooth, thick, and brittle. The stamens are arranged spirally in a rosette shape. Each stamen is a narrow inverted triangle and is about 6 mm long. The pistil is about 7 to 8 mm long and consists of 7 to 8 carpels. The carpels are narrow and ridged, purple-brown or tan, and have small tubercles. The remaining pedicels are dark brown. It has a very fragrant aroma and a light taste. The best ones are those with complete flowers and strong fragrance.

[Chemical composition] The stem contains oxycalcine, willow-leaf magnolia alkaloids, magnolia alkaloids, stephania alkaloids, tomato twig and leaf alkaloids and night-blooming primrose alkaloids. Bioalkali is mainly found in the skin.
