[Source] It is the root of Berberis chrysantha of the Berberidaceae family. It can be harvested throughout the year, sliced ​​and sun-dried.

[Original form] Deciduous or semi-evergreen shrub, about 1 meter high. The roots are horizontal, with a rough outer bark and fibrous roots. The branches are semi-prone, reddish-brown, slightly pubescent, and grooved. The spines are three-tenths and thin, 1 to 2 cm long. The leaves are clustered, leathery, obovate-spatulate or oblanceolate, 6-25 mm long, 3-6 mm wide, with obtuse, truncated or nearly acute apex, sometimes with a short tip, cuneate base, entire margin, gray-green above, gray below, slightly powdery, with obvious reticulate veins on both sides, and sessile. 4 to 7 flowers are clustered in leaf axils, golden yellow, about 7 mm in diameter; pedicel 4 to 7 mm long; 3 bracteoles, ovate; 6 sepals, petal-shaped, arranged in 2 whorls; petals obovate, obtuse or slightly concave at the apex, gradually narrowing at the base; ovary with 3 to 5 ovules. The berries are nearly spherical, pink, with a short, contracted style.

[Habitat distribution] Growing in thickets on hillsides or beside mountain roads. Distributed in Yunnan, Guizhou, Hubei, Sichuan and other places.

[Chemical composition] The root contains berberine, so it can be used as a substitute for Coptis chinensis.

【Functions and indications】 ① "Yunnan Chinese Herbal Medicine": "clears away heat and detoxifies, relieves inflammation, and stops diarrhea. Treats dysentery, sores, carbuncle, swelling and pain, conjunctivitis, and oral erosion in children."

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 1 to 3 qian. For external use: decoct in water and apply as eye drops or grind into powder and sprinkle.
