【English name】 PERICARPIUM PAPAVERIS

[Other names] Rice husk, millet husk, poppy husk, rice capsule husk

[Source] This product is the dried mature husk of poppy Papaver somniferum L., a plant of the genus Papaver in the family Papaveraceae. In autumn, the ripe fruits are picked after the juice is extracted, broken open, the seeds and stems are removed, and dried.

[Properties] This product is oval or bottle-shaped, mostly broken into flakes, with a diameter of 1.5 to 5 cm and a length of 3 to 7 cm. The outer surface is yellowish white, light brown to lavender, smooth, slightly shiny, and has longitudinal or transverse cuts. There are 6 to 14 radially arranged disc-shaped residual stigmas at the top; there is a short handle at the base. Lightweight and brittle. The inner surface is light yellow and slightly shiny. There are longitudinally arranged false septa, which are brown-yellow and densely covered with slightly raised tan spots. It has a light fragrance and a slightly bitter taste.

【Identification】 (1) The powder of this product is yellowish white. The outer epidermal cells of the pericarp are polygonal or square in surface view, 20 to 50 μm in diameter, with thick walls, and some cell cavities contain light yellow substances. The epidermal cells in the pericarp are oblong, rectangular or strip-shaped in surface view, with a diameter of 20-65μm and a length of 25-230μm. They have thick periventricular walls, obvious pits and grooves, and some have visible stratified lines. The thin-walled cells of the pericarp are round or oblong, with slightly thick walls. The ducts are mostly reticular or spiral, with a diameter of 10 to 70 μm. The bast fibers are long and spindle-shaped, with a diameter of 20 to 30 μm, slightly thick walls, and obvious oblique pores, some of which intersect in a herringbone or cross shape. The milk ducts are long and narrow, with thick walls and contain light yellow substances.
