【Original form】 Evergreen shrub, 2 meters high. The roots are irregular and blocky, with a few fine roots growing on them. The stem is erect and branched, with twigs that are relatively sturdy, glabrous or sparsely pubescent. The leaves are simple, alternate, leathery, oblong-obovate to short cuneate-obovate, 2.5-8 cm long, 1-3.5 cm wide, with pits on the upper side where the glands fall off, glands on the lower side, and usually glabrous; the petiole is 1-4 mm long, glabrous or with sparse short soft hairs. Dioecious. The spike inflorescence is solitary in the leaf axil, with inconspicuous branches at the base; the male inflorescence is erect or upward-inclined, with greatly shortened branches and 1 to 3 male flowers; the male flowers have no bracts and 1 to 3 stamens; the female inflorescence is 1.5 cm long, with greatly shortened branches and 2 to 4 sterile bracts and 2 female flowers: the female flowers have 2 bracts and the ovary is glabrous. The drupe is spherical, dark red when ripe, and has a hard, yellow-white endocarp. 1 seed.

[Habitat distribution] Growing on the edge of forests on hillsides and in bushes. Distributed in Yunnan, Guizhou and other places.

[Properties and flavors] ① "Yunnan Chinese Herbal Medicine": "Root bark: astringent, cool. Fruit: sour, cool."

[Functions and indications] Treat dysentery, diarrhea, indigestion, metrorrhagia, rectal bleeding, prolapse of the anus, rheumatic pain, and injuries from falls.

[Usage and Dosage] For internal use: decocted in water, 3 to 5 qian; or soaked in wine.

[Additional prescription] ① For treating rheumatic pain: Grind bayberry root, red ginseng and its underleaf flower into powder and take with wine or boiled water.
