[Original form] Small deer hair is a perennial low herb. It has creeping branches that spread out in all directions. The culm is erect or inclined, 5-25cm high, rough or hairy below the inflorescence, usually glabrous or pubescent on the nodes, with densely scale-like leaves at the base and many branches from the base. The leaf sheaths are mostly gathered at the base of the culm, glabrous, longer or shorter than the internodes, and sometimes branched inside the sheaths; the ligule is very short, with a circle of cilia on it; the leaf blades are narrowly linear, hard-pointed, 0.5-6cm long, about 1.5mm wide, flat or involute like needles; glabrous. Inflorescence spike-shaped, 2-7cm long, 3-5mm wide, with solitary branches, distant from each other and not overlapping; spikelets 2-4mm long, containing (2-)4-8 florets, clearly arranged in 2 neat rows on the spike axis; glume ovate, with membranous margins and sparsely ciliated, rough on the ridges, the first glume 1-2mm long, the second glume 1.5-2.5mm long; the lemma ovate, with 5-9 veins, pointed at the apex, with membranous margins and ciliated, especially the hairs on both sides of the base are longer and denser, the first lemma 1.5-3mm long, the palea as long as the lemma, truncated or notched at the apex, with microcilia on the ridges; stamens 3, anthers about 1.5mm long; ovary glabrous, styles 2, stigmas feathery, terminal. Caryopsis ovate to oblong. Flowering and fruiting period is from May to August.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: It often grows in saline-alkali land and sandy beaches.

[Chemical composition] Aeluropus littoralis is rich in iron, calcium and magnesium. Inorganic elements such as potassium and sodium. The aerial parts contain higher levels of protein and fat.
