The efficacy and function of Brahman Gleditsia sinensis

Brahmannia root is a very familiar medicinal material with unusual effects and functions. It is the key to cure many diseases. Let's have a deeper understanding of Brahmannia root together!

[Other names] Huyeyanmo, Aliqufa, Persian soapberry (Youyang Zazu), Alebo (Bencao Shiyi), Qingxie Yamdou (Pharmacology of Chinese Medicine).

[Source] It is the fruit of the sausage tree of the legume family. The fruits are harvested when they are ripe in September and sun-dried.

[Original form] Sausage tree, also known as ox horn tree and yellow locust tree.

[Habitat distribution] Cultivated in various places in southern my country.

[Properties] Dried pods are cylindrical, 30-60 cm long, 1.5-2 cm in diameter, with a pointed apex and sometimes an idemoid stalk at the base; the surface is dark brown, smooth and shiny, with obvious ventral and dorsal sutures. The fruit peel is thin, hard and woody. There are many transverse septa on the inner surface, and each septum contains a seed with a long, dark funicle attached to the ventral suture. The seeds are flat oval, about 8 mm long, 6 mm wide, and 4 mm thick. They are reddish brown, smooth and hard, light yellow inside, with horny endosperm and curved embryo. They taste sweet and slightly sour, with a peculiar odor. The best ones are dry, complete, handleless and silent when shaken.

[Chemical composition] The pulp contains unsaturated wax, aloe-rhodin glycosides, and glucosides containing hydroxymethoxyanthraquinone. The seeds contain about 27% gum, which is composed of 24% galactose and 76% mannose. The bark contains 10% condensed tannins, whose constituent units are 3,4-dihydroxyflavans. This type of tannin is also found in the leaves. The bark still contains wax and resin, and allergens have been isolated. The heartwood contains allebane, aloe-emodin and rhein.

[Pharmacological action] The fruit or pulp has a laxative effect (contains anthraquinone glycosides), but large amounts can cause nausea, gastrointestinal bloating and abdominal pain; the antimalarial effect is not constant; the peel and bark have no antimalarial effect. Intraperitoneal injection of 10-20 ml/kg of its water-alcohol extract (1 ml is equivalent to 1 gram of crude drug) into mice can cause poisoning: depression, unsteady gait, and difficulty breathing, which return to normal after 24 hours. It has a stimulating effect on isolated guinea pig small intestine and rabbit duodenum. 0.1 ml can inhibit isolated rabbit hearts, but can recover. Intraperitoneal injection of 10 ml/kg of barbiturate in mice can prolong the sleep time induced by barbiturate, indicating a sedative effect.

[Properties and flavors] "Supplement to Compendium of Materia Medica": "bitter, very cold, non-toxic."

【Functions and indications】 ① "Ben Rong Shi Yi": "It is used to treat heat wind between the heart and diaphragm, heart jaundice, bone steaming, cold and heat, and kill three kinds of worms."

[Clinical Application] Treatment of epigastric pain: Take the kernels of the sausage tree and make a decoction. Each 10 ml contains about 1 liang (10 liang system) of fresh fruit, which is the amount for one dose. Take 3 times a day, 7 days as a course of treatment. 56 cases of epigastric pain (including gastric and duodenal ulcers, acute and chronic gastritis, gastrointestinal neurosis, etc.) were treated, all of which achieved good analgesic effects. It also had a significant improvement effect on constipation, excessive gastric acid, loss of appetite, etc. It is reported that this product is a kind of analgesic laxative, but after long-term boiling (generally more than 8 hours), it has no laxative effect but an astringent effect. This product is slightly toxic and overdose may cause vomiting. Therefore, it is generally better to use fruits that are not fully ripe.
