[Original form] Evergreen tree, up to 20 meters high. Trifoliate leaves, alternate; leaflets ovate to elliptic-ovate, papery, 8-15 cm long, 4-8 cm wide, acuminate at apex, cuneate at base, serrated at margin; petiole 7-10 cm long. Flowers are small, unisexual, and dioecious; panicles are axillary; flowers are light green and without petals; sepals are 5 and arranged in an imbricate manner; male flowers have 5 stamens and a reduced ovary that is shield-shaped; female flowers have 8 or 4-chambered ovaries and 3 styles that do not divide. The fruit is berry-like, spherical, as big as a pea, and brown or light red. The seeds are oblong and the endosperm is fleshy. Flowering period is from April to May. The fruiting period is from August to October.

[Habitat distribution] It often grows in open areas at low altitudes, especially on river banks. Moist and fertile sandy loam is most suitable. Distributed in Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Shaanxi, Henan, Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Taiwan and other places.

[Chemical composition] The root contains β-amyrin, ursolic acid and β-sitosterol. The bark contains terpenoid acetate, terpenoids, β-sitosterol and betulinic acid methyl ester. The stems contain terpenoids and terpenoid-3β-ol. The branches and leaves contain sugars, amino acids, phenolic components, flavonoids and coumarins. The leaves also contain 8-16% potassium tartrate and calcium tartrate, terpenoid-3α-acetic acid ester, terpenoid, terpenoid-3β-ol, terpenoid 3α-ol, β-sitosterol, and gallic acid. The seeds contain 30% non-drying oil, are light yellow and have a fragrance.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 3 to 5 qian; or soaked in wine. For external use: mash and apply or decoct in water for washing.

[Additional prescription] ① Treating gastric nausea caused by indigestion: 2 liang of fresh Cyperus rotundus leaves, 5 qian each of peach parasitic plant, bitter almond, white-haired vine, water sword grass, and deer mouth grass. Boil one bowl of water with two and a half bowls, and divide it into four portions. Take a portion of soaked black sugar every two hours, four times a day. One dose is considered complete.
