[Source] It is the whole herb of Chara fragilis of the Characeae family.

[Original form] Aquatic green algae, 10 to 50 cm tall, fixed to the bottom of the water with forked rhizomes. The main stem is slender, with side branches growing on the nodes; there is a large cell in the center of the internodes of the main stem and side branches, which is usually surrounded by a layer of slender cells called cortical cells. The nodes are composed of many small cells. The side branches are distributed with "leaves", which are single-celled. During reproduction, an oval egg sac is formed in the axil of the "leaf", and there is a spherical sperm sac underneath the egg sac, which is used for sexual reproduction; vegetative reproduction is also possible.

[Chemical composition] Contains crude protein 10.00-17.94%, carbohydrates 31.50-42%, ash 6.10%, nitrogen 1.60-2.87% (dry weight), glucose 12.40%, xylose 1.60% and rhamnose 0.65% (dry weight). It also contains amino acids such as aspartic acid, cysteine, lysine, arginine, glutamic acid and leucine.

【Functions and indications】Expectorant, cough relieving and asthma relieving. Treat chronic bronchitis, cough, asthma, and chest tightness.

[Clinical Application] Treatment of chronic bronchitis: Wash the fish grass taken out of the water immediately, dry it in the shade or in an oven, and make it into powder, pills or tablets for oral administration, 5 to 7 fen each time (raw drug dosage), 2 to 3 times a day before meals, 10 days as a course of treatment. 896 cases were treated, with an overall effective rate of 75.7%, of which 35.5% showed marked effect or above. It has better expectorant and cough-relieving effects. Within 1 to 2 days of taking the medicine, the itching in the throat is relieved, the sputum is coughed up quickly, the cough is relieved, and the chest feels comfortable. After 3 to 5 days, the wheezing is also relieved, the appetite is increased, the spirit is lifted, and the condition improves. Those who have been cured recently generally need 1 to 2 courses of treatment. This product can relieve tracheal inflammation, reduce secretions, and improve ventilation conditions, thereby playing the role of expectorant, cough relieving, and asthma relief. Clinically, it has been observed that if the dose exceeds 1 qian each time, side effects such as dry mouth, nausea, and diarrhea will occur, which can be alleviated or disappear after reducing the dose.
