[Original form] Water sedge is an annual to biennial herb, 30-60cm tall. Rhizome cylindrical, dark brown, glabrous or pubescent. Leaves are opposite; with short petioles or sessile; leaf blades are usually lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate, 3-14cm long, 8-20mm wide, with pointed to acuminate apex, cuneate base, entire or wavy margins, and linear stalactites on both sides. 3-7 flowers clustered in leaf axils; bracts ovate or elliptic, 4-6mm long; bracteoles lanceolate or linear, about half the length of the calyx; stamens 6-8mm, covered with short rough hairs, 5-lobed to the middle, lobes triangular-lanceolate, hairy; corolla light reddish purple, about 1cm long, with fine hairs on the outside, corolla bilipped, upper lip 2 shallowly lobed, lower lip 3-lobed, lobes rounded; stamens 4, didynamous; ovary glabrous, with long style, stigma hooked. Capsule is linear, about 10mm long. There are 16 to 32 seeds, which are small, square, round and flat, light brown in color, and have dense white hairs when soaked in water. Flowering period is September-October.

[Properties] Identification of properties: Slightly flat heart-elbow shape, diameter 1-15mm. The surface is brownish red or dark brown, slightly smooth, without reticular patterns, and has a hilum at the base. The surface is covered with adherent mucilaginous epidermal hairs, which are filmy and swell and stand upright when in contact with water, becoming fluffy and very sticky, and will clumping into clumps when wet. Odorless, light taste and sticky to the tongue.
