【English name】 FRUCTUS CAROTAE

[Source] This product is the dried mature fruit of the wild carrot Daucus carota L. of the Umbelliferae family. When the fruits are ripe in autumn, cut the fruit branches, dry them in the sun, beat the fruits and remove impurities.

[Properties] This product is a double-hanging fruit, oval in shape, mostly split into schizocarps, each schizocarp is 3 to 4 mm long and 1.5 to 2.5 mm wide. The surface is light green-brown or brown-yellow, with the remains of the style at the top, obtuse base, raised back, with 4 narrow wing-like secondary ridges, and a row of densely covered yellow-white hooked spines on the wings. The spines are about 1.5mm long. There is an inconspicuous main ridge in the depression between the secondary ridges, on which short soft hairs are scattered. The joint surface is flat, with 3 veins and soft hairs on it. The kernel is white and oily. Light body. It has a unique aroma when crushed, and tastes slightly spicy and bitter.

【Identification】 (1) Cross section of the fruit: There is one row of exocarp cells, with non-glandular hairs differentiated into single cells on the main ridges, with a length of 86 to 390 μm. There are large oil tubes in the mesocarp, one at the base of each secondary ridge and two at the junction surface. They are oblong, 50-120μm in diameter, and contain yellow-brown oil droplets. There are small vascular bundles on the inner side of the main ridge. The endocarp is a row of flat thin-walled cells. The seed coat cells contain reddish-brown substances. The endosperm is rich, with polygonal thin-walled cells and slightly thicker walls. It contains fatty oil and aleurone grains, which contain tiny clusters of calcium oxalate crystals.
