[Source] Medicinal material source: The root of Ardisia japonica of the Myrsinaceae family.

[Original form] Small shrub, about 30cm high. The rhizome is elongated and woody; the stem is gray-brown with longitudinal stripes when old, with obvious leaf scars, and unbranched except for special lateral flower branches. Leaves are alternate; petiole 3-8mm long; leaf blade is firm papery or leathery, narrowly lanceolate to linear, 7-12(-20)cm long, about 1(-2.5)cm wide, apex narrowly acuminate, base cuneate, entire, margin recurved and with marginal glandular dots; lateral veins connected into inconspicuous marginal veins. Inflorescence subumbel, borne on the top of curved lateral special branches, branches 2-7cm long; leafless, finely pubescent; pedicel 1(-2)cm long, with sparse scales or fine pubescence; sepals broadly ovate, 2-3(-4)mm long; apex obtuse or rounded, with dense glandular dots; petals red, oblong-ovate, 5-6mm long, with dense glandular dots; stamens are almost the same length as petals, anthers oblong-lanceolate, with more or less glandular dots on the back; pistil is the same length as petals or slightly longer. The fruit is spherical, about 6mm in diameter, red, and has glandular dots. The flowering period is from May to July, and the fruiting period is from November to January of the following year.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown in the shade and wet places under the forest at an altitude of about 700m.
