[Original form] Perennial herb, 1 to 2 meters high. The underground stems run horizontally. Simple leaves are alternate; ovate, 10-25 cm long, 8-10 cm wide, gradually pointed at the apex, entire, rounded at the base, dark green above, light green below, with raised main vein and 5-6 pairs of lateral veins; petiole is about 2/3 of the leaf blade or equal in length, with a sheath at the base embracing the stem. Inflorescence axillary, peduncle shorter than petiole; spathe small, white with light yellow, 4-7 cm long, obtuse at the top and with a small acute tip; spadix equal to or shorter than spathe, about 3-6 cm long, with petiole; flowers monoecious and bare; male flowers at the top of axis; female flowers at the bottom; male and female inflorescences usually adjacent, with few neutral flowers between them; no appendages at the top of axis; 2-4 stamens, separate, nearly rod-shaped, with slit anther pores; ovary superior, 1-2-chambered, each with 1 ovule, stigma cup-shaped. Flowering period is from September to October.
