[Other names] Polygonum multiflorum, Cyperus rotundus, Polygonum multiflorum

[Source] It is the rhizome of Paris yunnanensis Franch., a plant of the Liliaceae family . It can be harvested throughout the year, but autumn is the best time to harvest it and then sun-dried or sliced ​​and sun-dried.

[Original form] Perennial herb. There are 6 to 10 leaves arranged in whorls, the petiole is 5 to 20 mm long, the leaf blade is thick and papery, lanceolate, ovate-oblong to obovate, 5 to 11 cm long and 2 to 4.5 cm wide. The pedicel emerges from the top of the stem, with a flower on the top; the flowers are bisexual, the sepals are lanceolate or oblong, green, 3.5-6 cm long; the tepals are linear and slightly lanceolate, yellow, about 1/2 the length of the sepals to nearly the same length, and 2-6 mm wide above the middle; there are 8-10 stamens, the anthers are 1-1.5 cm long, the filaments are shorter than the anthers, and the protruding part of the connective is 1-2 mm. The flowering period is from June to July, and the fruiting period is from September to October.

[Habitat distribution] It grows in the shade and wet places under mountain forests or in roadside grass. It is mainly produced in Yunnan, Guizhou and Sichuan.

[Properties] The rhizomes are cylindrical, mostly straight, a few are curved. Diameter 1~6cm, length 4.5~12cm. The surface is yellow-brown, a few are gray-brown, and relatively smooth; the segments are sparse and the protrusions are not obvious; the stem scars are semicircular or oblate, arranged irregularly, and the surface is relatively flat or slightly protruding. It is hard and not easy to break. It breaks into powder or keratin. It has a faint smell and a bitter taste.

[Chemical composition] Contains a variety of steroidal saponins, which are diosgenin, trisaccharide and tetrasaccharide glycosides of pennogenin, as well as β-ecdysone, carotene, etc.

[Nature and flavor] Slightly cold, bitter; slightly toxic.

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat and detoxifies, reduces swelling and relieves pain, cools the liver and calms the nerves. It is used to treat carbuncles, sore throat, snake bites, injuries from falls, and convulsions.
