[Source] It is the whole herb or root of the herb Tomia lappa of the family Tomia lappa.

[Original form] Perennial herb, 30 to 80 cm tall. The stem is quadrangular, lavender, with inverted short hairs and purple stripes, and the nodes are swollen. Simple leaves are opposite; ovate-oblong, 5-10 cm long, 4-7 cm wide, with short pointed or acuminate tip, cuneate base, obtusely serrated edges, and short hairs on veins on both sides; petiole 0.5-3 cm long. The spike inflorescence is terminal or axillary, 10-20 cm long; bracts and bracteoles are awl-shaped; flowers are sparse and short-stalked; calyx is tubular, with 5 ribs, 3-6 mm long, the upper lip has 3 teeth that are awn-like hooks, and the lower lip has 2 shorter teeth and no awns; the corolla is tubular, pink or white, about 5 mm long, and cleft into a lip shape, with 2 shallow lobes on the upper lip and 3 lobes on the lower lip; 4 stamens, 2 strong, attached to the corolla tube; ovary is superior, 1-chambered, style is terminal, and stigma is 2-lobed. Achenes are enclosed in persistent calyx and are 8 to 10 mm long. Flowering period is from June to August. The fruiting period is from September to October.

[Habitat distribution] Grown under forests or in shady and moist places on the edge of forests. Distributed throughout Northeast China, North China and the Yangtze River Basin.

[Chemical composition] The root contains the lignan component linalool-II and linalool acetate which has insecticidal effect.

[Nature and flavor] "Guizhou Herbal Medicine": "Root: cool in nature, bitter in taste."

【Functions and indications】Detoxification and insecticidal. Treat scabies, impetigo, and fever caused by sore infection.

【Usage and Dosage】 For external use: mash and apply or grind into powder and apply. For internal use: Root: decoct in water, 0.5-1 liang.
