[Source] It is the flower bud of the lotus plant of the Nymphaeaceae family. Harvest large buds or opened flowers between June and July and dry them in the shade.

[Habitat distribution] It is produced in most parts of the country.

[Properties] The dried flower buds are conical, 2.5 to 4 cm long and about 2 cm in diameter. Surface is gray-brown. The petals are multi-layered and arranged in a spiral shape; the scattered petals are oval or elliptical, slightly wrinkled or folded, with many fine veins on the surface and slightly thick at the base; the texture is smooth and soft. After removing the petals, the center is a young lotus pod with a round and flat top, more than 10 small holes on it, a gradually narrowing base, and many stamens around it. The pedicel is thin and cylindrical with wrinkles or lines, purple-black surface, thorn-like protrusions, and large pores in cross section. It has a slight fragrance and a bitter taste. The best ones are those that have not opened, have neat and clean petals, and have a fresh and fragrant smell.

[Chemical composition] The flowers contain quercetin, luteolin, isoquercetin, luteolin glucoside, kaempferol, kaempferol-3-galactosyl glucoside, kaempferol-3-diglucoside and other flavonoids.

【Meridian】 "Ben Cao Zai Xin": "enters the heart and liver meridians."

【Functions and indications】Promote blood circulation and stop bleeding, remove dampness and eliminate wind. Treats vomiting blood due to falls, and blisters and eczema.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral administration: grind into powder, 0.5-1 qian; or decoct in water. For external use: apply to the affected area.
