[Source] The roots of the plant Rhizoma Dioscoreae of the Thymelaeaceae family can be dug up throughout the year. Cut off the above-ground part, wash, and dry in the sun or in an oven.

[Habitat distribution] Produced in Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian and other places.

[Properties] The dried roots are cylindrical, curved and branched; the surface is yellow-brown, with protruding root marks and irregular longitudinal wrinkles. The skin is very fibrous and not easy to break. The wood is hard and the broken surface is cracked. The cross section is nearly circular, the cortex is easy to peel off, relatively thick, accounting for about 1/2 of the wood, the outside is yellow-brown, the inside is white, with filamentous fibers, and the cambium is obvious; the wood is light yellow with clear rays.

[Chemical composition] The root bark contains the flavonoid glycoside cannabinoids, as well as polysaccharides, resins, volatile oils, phenolic components and trace amounts of unsaturated sterols.

[Preparation] Steam, slice and dry.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter, cold, poisonous.

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat, promotes diuresis, detoxifies, kills parasites, and breaks up accumulations. Treat pneumonia, mumps, edema, scrofula, sores, swelling and pus, and bruises.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water (preferably for more than 4 hours), 3 to 5 cents. For external use: grind into powder and apply on skin.

[Additional prescription] ① For the treatment of pneumonia, bronchitis and tonsillitis: 2 qian of the white bark of the root of Rhizoma Cynoglossi, decocted in water and taken orally. (Commonly used herbal medicines among Zhejiang folks)
