[Alias] Wild lacquer tree root (Commonly used Chinese herbal medicines in Sichuan).

[Source] It is the root or root bark of the Anacardiaceae plant. Available all year round.

[Original form] Deciduous shrub or small tree, up to 10 meters high. The bark is gray-brown, smooth at first and then cracked longitudinally. Odd-pinnate compound leaves, mostly clustered at branch tops; leaflets 9 to 15, opposite, oblong-lanceolate, 5 to 10 cm long, 2 to 3 cm wide, with long pointed tip, slightly asymmetrical or cuneate base, entire margin, smooth and glabrous on both sides. The panicles are axillary, about 10 cm long; the flowers are small, polygamous, and yellow-green; the calyx is 5-lobed, with lobes ovate; the petals are 5, ovate-elliptical; the stamens are 5; the ovary is superior, with 1 chamber. The drupe is flat and oblique, with a waxy mesocarp and a hard endocarp that is light yellow when ripe. Flowering period is from May to June. Fruiting period is October.

[Habitat distribution] Growing on hillsides, ravines and shrub forests. Distributed in Southwest China, South China, East China, Hebei, Henan and other places.

【Chemical composition】 The bark contains 21.35% tannin. The sap contains urushiol and laccase; the wood contains fisetin and lignin. The leaves contain wild sumac glycoside and tannins. The fruit contains anacardic acid, anacardin A and anacardin B. The oil content of seeds, shells and kernels is 30.1%, 56.36% and 9.52% respectively. The seeds also contain wax, which contains docosanoic acid and eicosanedioic acid.

[Pharmacological action] The alcohol extract has the effect of antihistamine, 5-hydroxytryptamine and acetylcholine on isolated smooth muscle organs (such as small intestine, large intestine, uterus, bronchi). It has similar properties to Antazoline (antihistamine), Lysergic acid diethylamide (anti-5-hydroxytryptamine) and Atropine, but with weaker strength. It is used clinically to treat asthma, cough, diarrhea, abdominal pain, etc.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter, cold.

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat and detoxifies, stops bleeding, treats hematuria, metrorrhagia, leucorrhea, sores and tinea.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 0.5 to 1 liang. For external use: mash and apply or grind into powder and apply.

[Additional prescription] ① To treat bleeding in urine: 50 cents of Linbeizi. Take 50 cents of bitter bamboo water mixed with simmered water. (Guizhou Herbs)
