The efficacy and function of Muhe

Muhe is a medicinal material frequently used in traditional Chinese medicine and is often used to treat various diseases. So today I would like to share with you some information about Muhe.

[Alias] Coptis chinensis, Suogudan, Laohanqiu (Shaanxi Chinese Materia Medica), Zhushiqi, Chengganqi, Laoshepan, Tianpengsan, Hongtiaoqi, Ma Yaozi, Hongyaozi, and Jinmaogou (Shaanxi Chinese Herbal Medicine).

[Source] It is the rhizome of the Saxifragaceae plant. Harvest in autumn. After digging out, remove the stems, leaves and fibrous roots, wash, slice, and dry in the sun or in an oven.

[Original form] Gui Lantern Qing, also known as: Water Five Dragons.

[Habitat distribution] Growing on sunny slopes in deep mountains. Distributed in central my country. Produced in Shaanxi, Sichuan, Henan, Hebei, Gansu and other places.

[Properties] The dry and intact rhizome is flat cylindrical or rod-shaped, up to 20 to 30 cm long, 3 to 6 cm in diameter, and mostly curved. The surface of the cork is brown with horizontal and vertical wrinkles; it is covered with brown scales, especially dense at the top, sometimes hairy; and there are scattered fibrous roots or traces of removed fibrous roots. Most of the products have been cut into slices horizontally or vertically, with a thickness of about 1 cm; the cut surface is reddish brown, shrunken and uneven, with small raised dots arranged in concentric rings, powdery, and white crystals appear. Odorless, bitter taste. The best ones are dry, large slices, and reddish-brown in cut surface.

[Chemical composition] Fresh rhizomes contain 18% starch and 20.1% carbohydrates; dry rhizomes contain 42.5-51.5% starch and 47.5% carbohydrates. The rhizome also contains anthraquinone glycosides, cardiac glycosides, tannins, etc. The leaves contain tannins.

[Pharmacological action] 10% extract of Rhizoma Cynomorii has a broad-spectrum antiviral effect in vitro. Using primary monolayer cell tissue culture of human embryonic kidney, it has inhibitory effect on adenovirus type 3, enterovirus (poliomyelitis type II, Coxsackie A9 and B5, Echo 9), herpes simplex virus, etc.; using golden hamster kidney monolayer cell culture, it also has inhibitory effect on Japanese encephalitis (Beijing Weiyan No. 1) virus.

【Properties and flavors】 ① "Sichuan Chinese Materia Medica": "neutral in nature, sour and astringent in taste, non-toxic."

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat and dampness, stops bleeding and promotes tissue regeneration. It is used to treat dysentery due to damp heat, chronic diarrhea, leucorrhea, leucorrhea, metrorrhagia, hematemesis, epistaxis, bloody stool, sores, and wounds.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 1.5 to 3 qian (0.5 to 1 liang for fresh ones). For external use: mash and apply or grind into powder and mix with other ingredients.

[Additional prescription] ① Treating diarrhea due to damp-heat: Muhe, Portulaca oleracea, and Allium macrostemon. Decoction in water.
