The leaves are narrow, thick and juicy, with a long blunt tip and thorn-like hard teeth on the edges. Inflorescence raceme, with long stalk; bracts ovate-linear, obtuse at apex; flowers about 3.5 cm long, red, with free perianth. Flowering and fruiting period is July to September. [Chemical composition] The upper part of the stem (including leaves) contains total anthraquinone.

[Pharmacological action] 1. Laxative effect: Oral administration of Aloe vera leaf powder to male rats has a laxative effect, and the half effective dose is 900 mg/kg. Rats are more sensitive to the diarrhoeal effect than mice, and there is no gender difference. Pre-administration of tetracycline hydrochloride can reduce its laxative effect. The active ingredient with laxative effect is aloe-emodin. Rats orally ingested aloe-emodin glycosides, which were broken down into aloe-emodin-9-anthrone and aloe-emodin in the large intestine. All three caused an increase in water volume in the large intestine of rats, and only aloe-emodin-9-anthrone could increase water volume in the small intestine. When the above substances were directly injected into the colon of rats, only aloe-emodin-9-anthrone could cause an increase in intestinal water volume and electrolyte imbalance.
