[Original form] Stinkweed is a perennial herb. The fibrous roots are thin and dense. Culms are clustered, erect or genu-genu at base, 30-70cm tall, often densely branched at base. The leaf sheath is smooth or slightly rough, the upper one is shorter than the internode, and the lower one is longer than the internode; the ligule is transparent and membranous, 1-3mm long, torn at the top and decurrent on both sides; the leaf blade is thin, 6-15cm long, 2-7mm wide, often curled when dry, glabrous or sparsely pubescent on the surface. The panicle is narrow, 8-15cm long and 1-2cm wide, with branches erect or obliquely ascending, the main branch is up to 5cm long, the spikelet stalk is short, linear and curved, and covered with fine hairs on the upper part; the spikelet is 5-7mm long, containing 2-4 pregnant florets, light green or creamy, and the top is composed of several sterile lemmas integrated into a small ball; the spikelets are equal in length, membranous, with 3-5 veins, and the dorsal midrib often has tiny cilia, 4-7mm long; the lemma is pointed or obtuse at the apex, is membranous, with 7 raised main veins, and the back is granular and rough. The first lemma is 5-6mm long, the palea is shorter than or equal to the lemma in the upper flowers, the apex is obtuse, and the ridges have tiny cilia; the anther is about 1.3mm long. The caryopsis is brown, bare, spindle-shaped, and about 1.5 mm long. Flowering and fruiting period is from May to August.
