[Source] This product is the dried mature seeds of Momordica cochinchinensis (Lour.) Spreng., a plant of the Cucurbitaceae family. Harvest the ripe fruits in winter, cut them open, dry them in the sun until they are half dry, remove the pulp, take out the seeds, and dry them.

[Properties] This product is in the shape of a flat round plate, slightly raised or sunken in the middle, with a diameter of 2 to 4 cm and a thickness of about 0.5 cm. The surface is gray-brown to dark brown, with a reticular pattern and a light yellow hilum on a larger tooth-like protrusion on the edge. The exotesta is hard and brittle, the endotesta is gray-green and velvety. There are 2 cotyledons, which are yellowish white and rich in oil. It has a special greasy smell and tastes bitter.

【Identification】 (1) The powder of this product is yellow-grey in color. The thick-walled cells are oval or quasi-circular, with wavy edges, a diameter of 51 to 117 μm, thick walls, lignified, and with a distinct cell cavity, some of which are narrow. The thin-walled cells of the cotyledons are polygonal, containing fatty oil blocks and starch particles; the fatty oil blocks are round, with a diameter of 27 to 73 μm, and a reticular texture can be seen on the surface.

[Preparation] Momordica charantia: remove the shell and take out the kernel, then crush it.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter, slightly sweet, cool; poisonous.

[entry into meridians] Enter the liver, spleen and stomach meridians.

【Functions and indications】Dispersing nodules and relieving swelling, attacking toxins and curing sores. Used for sores, swellings, mastitis, scrofula, hemorrhoids, psoriasis, and baldness.

[Usage and Dosage] 0.9-1.2g; For external use, grind into powder and apply to the affected area with oil or vinegar.
